Although Parkridge Cardiothoracic Surgery offers many minimally invasive surgical approaches to heart care, sometimes open surgery is the best option. We understand that this can be a frightening prospect, but our experienced cardiothoracic surgeons and specialized nurses and operating room personnel have trained extensively to provide the best possible outcomes.

Open surgery requires general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep for the duration of the procedure. When you wake up, you will be in the Cardiac Recovery Unit, where our highly trained nurses specialize in caring for postoperative heart patients. They will help you recover after surgery.

You will be transferred to the floor, where our nurses will care for you until you are discharged. Following discharge from the hospital, you may be referred to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Parkridge Medical Center, where you will embark on a personalized exercise program designed to restore your heart’s strength.

Our surgeons will follow up with you throughout the postoperative process.
