Surgeons at Parkridge Cardiothoracic Surgery offer two approaches to coronary artery bypass surgery. We frequently use the traditional approach, in which cardiothoracic surgeons use a heart-lung machine to circulate and oxygenate blood while the heart is stopped. We also offer beating-heart surgery, in which cardiothoracic surgeons perform the bypass procedure while the heart beats.

This method is only recommended to specific patients and can be advantageous for those who require multiple, simultaneous bypass grafts in different locations of the heart.

Patient Benefits

Beating heart bypass surgery can offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Decreased lengths of hospitalization
  • Reduced need for blood transfusion
  • Reduced trauma
  • Reduced risk of neurological complications such as stroke
